You’ve probably seen the headlines — the fashion industry is one of the biggest global polluters, second only to oil. But beyond the carbon footprint and mountains of waste, there’s a more uncomfortable truth:

On April 24, 2013, the world watched in horror as the Rana Plaza building collapsed in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The structure housed several garment factories producing clothing for some of the world’s biggest fast fashion brands.

Over 1,100 people were killed. More than 2,500 were injured. Most of them were young women, sewing for pennies a day under life-threatening conditions.

Why did the building collapse?

• Cracks had been discovered the day before — yet workers were forced back in.

• There were no proper safety inspections or regulations.

• And the unrelenting demand for fast, cheap production left no room for humanity.

• The Factory owners keep demanding more production from workers in limited amount of time so while they are getting paid per piece the workers are incentivised to rush and make larger quantities to earn a decent living wage. 

It was a tragedy — and a turning point. “Who made my clothes?” became a global question and Fashion Revolution was born! People started to look beyond the label - at not only the brand but also the values it carried!
